Repertory Policy
“The theatre is not simply a chronicle made for those who will come after – it is rather a means of communication with our contemporaries. I see repertory as a running commentary on our times and surroundings; it is either a charged reaction to or an anticipation of events in a theatre-specific way.”
Branislav Mićunović,
Director of the Montenegrin National Theatre 1997 - 2008
The repertory and programming are based upon openness towards new tendencies in the theatre, opportunities for different artists and fulfilling needs of different audiences, guided by the recognition of the need for international participation, while ensuring that local needs and interests are represented and that they are in keeping with the ethos of the theatre itself.

FESTIVALS OF THE MONTENEGRIN NATIONAL THEATRE
EUROPEAN THEATRE MOVEMENT
16 – 25TH JUNE 1998
In June 1998, the Montenegrin National Theatre started a research project dedicated to the European theatrical movement with the intention to present a new theatrical expression each year. The project of “The European theatrical movement” represented a challenge to the cultural surroundings of Montenegro and the chance to communicate with the most vital movements of modern theatre. Montenegrin National Theatre tends to be the leader of modern theatre in Montenegro, but also to find an authentic place for Montenegrin theatre in the European theatrical movements.
From June 16th to June 25th, 1998, new forms in the European dancing theatre were presented within the European theatrical movement. On this occasion the dance workshops consisted of a number of presentations, lectures and plays of eminent European dancers and choreographers who expand the borders of dancing theatre and in this way enrich modern theatrical expression.
FESTIVAL OF NATIONAL THEATRES
12-30TH NOVEMBER 2003
Montenegrin National Theatre organized the Festival of National Theatres in November 2003 in honor of its fiftieth anniversary. The Festival of National Theatres was established to present and juxtapose the achievements and the aesthetic repertory standards of national theatres. It was also meant to improve the theatrical offer and cultural image of Montenegro. The stage of Montenegrin National Theatre gathered the French, Greek, Romanian, Slovenian, Croatian, Macedonian and Serbian productions. The result of this gathering was the promotion of open theatre, good communication and establishing of the basis for rich repertory of future festivals.
FESTIVAL OF MONTENEGRIN THEATRE RUN-UP
12 – 23RD MAY 2005
The festival “Towards the possible Montenegrin theatre” was organised at Montenegrin National Theatre as a pilot project announcing the possibility to organize a festival of Montenegrin theatres. As opposed to its neighbouring countries, Montenegro has not yet had a festival of its own production, which initiated this manifestation. The repertory which was performed from May 12th – 23rd 2005 showed that the possibility to establish a national theatre festival was feasible.

A TEMPO
The international music festival “A Tempo” was meant to be a kind of an annex to the regular concert season and within this festival it was possible to focus on certain music phenomena. At first it was turned towards home production, representation of young artists and music for specific instruments. It was later “directed” towards the type of festival with a wider concept comprising of almost all music genres. An important segment of the festival is its own production which bore specific significance considering the fact that professional musical institutions did not exist in Montenegro at the time. Apart from the ones coming from Montenegro, many eminent artists from many European countries performed here.

2ND FESTIVAL OF MONTENEGRIN THEATRE
6 – 17 OCTOBER 2008
The Festival of Montenegrin Theatre represents an important manifestation within the total system of theatres in Montenegro. Its existence stimulates the total development of theatre.
The festival is national by character, and it is important for establishing theatrical and cultural identities in modern Montenegrin society. It is important to mention the fact that the festival of national Montenegrin theatre is the first official national manifestation representing Montenegrin production and coproduction in the form of competition festivals.
The festival of Montenegrin theatre is organised by Montenegrin National Theatre as its producer.
The festival represents a selection of theatrical production of the year done by theatrical institutions and independent projects. It promotes the best theatrical achievements.
The festival consists of the following programmes:
SELECTION represents the selection of the best plays performed by professional Montenegrin theatres, festival productions and co productions which had their first run in Montenegro. The selection includes other performing forms which do not represent traditional part of dramatic theatre.
THE PLUS SELECTION represents the theatrical achievements of Montenegrin artists in other countries.
THE OFF SELECTION represents new and bold plays with the power of research and striving for a new form.
The accompanying programme consists of various elements, conversations, lectures and presentations. An important segment of the programme is the Round table with the media and critics, in which the important protagonists take part. The round table gives basic information on the play and the theatre, together with professional critique.
The festival of Montenegrin theatre is competitive by character.
